Diffuse plaques had been much less strongly connected with dementia than were neuritic plaques at the age of 75 years, but by age 95 years these two neuropathological changes showed a similar association with dementia. Adjustment for demographic factors and inclusion just of individuals who received a medical diagnosis of dementia close to death did not alter our results .
